Breaking the Grass Ceiling: Women in Weed, July 2018

Lucas Lucas launched in late summer of 2017 as the brainchild of non-traditional artist and marketing/media pro Stacie Lucas. The mission-driven art gallery, performance venue and community gathering space was founded to smash outdated “art world” customs, and succeeded in doing so.

Lucas Lucas has prioritized exhibitions and experiences led by females and artists of color from its deliberate conception. The first Brooklyn location served as a safe, cutting-edge space for the greater good, where educational, ground-breaking and industry-shaking events and round-tables pushing hard for ethics and sustainability in fashion, equity in the cannabis industry, prison reform, racial justice and environmental action blazed trails for this new (read: uncomfortable, messy, beautiful) world.

From 2017 until July 2020, Lucas Lucas put out dynamic back-to-back programming from within a one hundred year old once neglected church-turned-autobody shop at 57 Conselyea Street in East Williamsburg. The space was transformed by a bootstrapped Lucas into a magnetic and powerful sanctuary. While that location was forced to shutter due to Covid (obviously), it was left far better than when acquired in early 2017, as evident by being virtually untouched by its new inhabitants today. Beyond the space, its epic experiences made history and will remain a beloved ground zero for progress across industries in our lifetime.
